Stephanie Maeseele
Stephanie Maeseele is a Flemish painter living and working in Ghent who explores different ways to combine imagery in collage form as a method to challenge perceptions. The pictorial manifestations are generated in layers so that the result can be seen as a deconstructive tool designed to undermine the certainty of appearances.
Stephanie received her MA degree from the LUCA School of Arts in 2008. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, including the Museum of Ixelles in Brussels, LLS387 in Antwerp, and the Bermondsey Project Space in London. She also participated in the Turps Studio Programme in London from 2015 to 2017.
'I'm adrift in a broad range of references to compose these works, yet the original photographic references aren’t mine. Hundreds of photographic slides were left after my grandfather’s death, years of accumulated incidents and memories from his travels around the globe. Engaging the possibilities of oil paint to evoke and suggest new meaning is at the essence of my work. In the process, involuntary memories, possibilities and recollections are unearthed. Once I’m engaged in this, it usually starts feeling like the painting is taking on its own logic. Everything is already there yet I need to decipher and unlock it.' — Stephanie Maeseele
